The village centre

7 kilometres from Cozes and 15 from Royan, on the " Beauty Coast ", Barzan with its 410 inhabitants offers the many delights of a peaceful village on the biggest estuary of Europe. Saint Pierre's church was built in 1878 and in front stands the statue dedicated to the war veterans. The commune mainly consists of agricultural grounds where game and wild birds have established their territory. You will not fail to be attracted to its waterside walks, which you will enjoy all the way from the bay of "Chant Dorat" up to the port of "Les Monards". And do not be amazed by the sudden appearance of a hare or wild duck frolicking around the bend. You are on their domain!

The associations of the commune: ASSA Barzan, hunters, Ball-trap, senior citizens club, the Festivals and "pétanque" committee offer, thanks to the dynamism of their volunteers, leisure activities to the inhabitants and to the tourists. During the summer, you are invited to join them in "pétanque" competitions, ball-traps, sardinades and friendly meals with dancing.
The associations of the canton will be found on their special page.

This place was inhabited from the neolithic around 3500 BC. An important harbour city extended over some 140 hectares in Roman times, NOVIOREGUM, then comparable to Saintes or Bordeaux, till the 4th century.
The first excavations of Léon Massiou started in 1921. The temple, on which a mill was built in the 16th century, was classified Historical Monument in 1937. Bought back by the municipality in 1993, the site with its showroom and conducted tours is open to visitors, thanks to the creation of an association, the ASSA Barzan. A museum is in progress.

Today researches are centred on the sanctuary, the baths, and town planning; and will soon include the big warehouses.

The ASSA Barzan, created in 1993 is an association for the protection and development of the archeological site. It organizes digs for students and volunteers, welcomes visitors and offers special animations for schools.
